Healthy Greens In Pickleman’s Sandwiches & Salads
Need another reason to order delicious Pickleman’s gourmet sandwiches and salads? We’ve got two – fresh spinach and freshly chopped romaine lettuce. These greens are refreshing, delicious, and packed full of vitamins and nutrients your body needs – and you can choose either one as your base for a Pickleman’s salad.
Spinach – The Original Superfood
First, spinach is loaded with vitamins: you’ll find A, K, D, and E in the dark green leaves – in fact, one cup of spinach contains over 900% of your daily recommended intake of vitamin K. These vitamins help regulate expression of genes, boost the immunes system, fortify your bones, and keep all of your systems running smoothly. Spinach is also a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which protect your cardiovascular system and prevent inflammation. The high levels of iron found in spinach are critical to red blood cell formation and help keep your muscles oxygenated, and the folate in spinach helps cells grow and subdivide, providing them with the building blocks they need, as well as being critical to the production of DNA and RNA. Spinach is truly a superfood – it’s like a multivitamin in a leaf!
Romaine – The Underrated Overperformer
In truth, though, everyone knows spinach is healthy. You’ve read enough Buzzfeed articles and watched enough Popeye to understand that. But here’s something you may not have known – romaine lettuce has its own complete store of vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients. It may not get the same press as spinach, but romaine lettuce really does pack a nutritional punch!
To start, romaine is an excellent source of protein – weighing in at about 7.7 grams per head of lettuce. What’s more, this is complete protein, with all 8 essential amino acids, which are chemicals your body needs to make the structures that let cells operate. Similar to spinach, romaine is a great source of Omega-3 essential fats, which we’ve already discussed the many benefits of. And here’s something we’re sure you wouldn’t guess – one head of romaine lettuce has more vitamin C than an orange! Romaine contains 167% of your RDA (recommended daily allowance), while an average orange only contains 92%. It’s also packed with a diverse array of B-vitamins, as well as vitamin A and K. Finally; romaine is a great source of another, absolutely vital nutrient – water! With 20 oz of water per head, romaine provides around 15% of your daily water needs. Now that’s quite a plant!
